Scarlet Fever is made by the Wild Beer Co, a brewery that’s very ‘in’ at the moment. Their Solera is one of my favourite beers of 2013 (I tried it late December, after my Golden Pints went up. Typical). On that basis I was keen to try Scarlet Fever, a gift courtesy of the in-laws from Beer Paradise (they sent me a crate, though there ain’t much left now…)
Scarlet Fever pours with a booming off-white head and a slightly hazy amber-red hue. There’s toffee, candied lemon peel, dusty hops and hints of toasted malt on the nose. The taste is tart red berries, bitter chocolate and a fiercely bitter hop finish; ideal for the hop heads amongst you who want to try something other than an IPA. What we have here is a bonkers ruby ale and you know what? I didn’t like it. It took me awhile to pick it out but when I did I couldn’t escape it. Ginger. Subtle, hidden among the hop scorch, but there. It does my nut in. That aside, it was just fine.
