“What’s the word on the street, Jonny?”
It’s all news and no rumours this month, with a good mix of bar opening updates and event happenings
The major announcement is that according to a Cardiff city councillor, BrewDog have lodged an application for a bar on 31 Westgate Street. This puts it just around the corner from Urban Tap House, City Arms and Zero degrees. You know, that whole Craft Beer District of Cardiff.
However, the better news I feel is that the Waen Brewery venue is pegged to open up on Barrack Lane around mid-February. The venue has been delayed since October last year but when it opens it should offer the best stock of take-home beer in the city centre, as well as being a spot you can drink at.
The large empty corner premises on the Hayes that used to be a Habitat is earmarked for a new Mitchell & Butler pub/restaurant. Given the vast floor space they have to fill it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Meanwhile, over on the events schedule there’s the Tiny Rebel vs Dark Star brewery takeover at the Urban Tap House on Thursday 16th January. It’s to promote Rebel Alliance, the new collaborative beer between Tiny Rebel and Dark Star, though I’m as equally keen to drink down some fine Dark Star beers which will be on the bar.
Next Monday 20 January there’s a stand up comedy-docudrama on the history of beer over at Porter’s Bar. Details and tickets here.
Finally, Tuesday 28 January is the next gathering of the Rebel Home brew club over at the Urban Tap House. I believe it is being held in the music room this time, following the last session’s immense turnout.
A good start to the year all round!
